HKU develops interactive e-learning platform

HKU's E-Learning Technology Development Laboratory has begun a project to develop a software platform which can be used to facilitate interactive e-learning and development of teaching materials for primary and secondary schools. Head of Laboratory Dr Wilton Fok Wai-tung said the software platform, iClass, was developed in 2011 and a total of 48 primary and secondary schools have signed up for a free trial. A unique feature of the platform is that teachers can use the platform's core functions to upload their own teaching materials for interactive e-learning in class. The software platform won an HK ICT 2012 Silver Award.

The project was evolved from the final year project of Ken Law and Eric Au-Yeung (Electronic Communication Engineering graduate 2010), which was supported by a Teaching Development Grant for further development. The project was supervised by Dr Wilton Fok. The solution allows teachers and students to interact and share their ideas in lecture through smartphone and tablet PC. Details of the project are available at: http://elearning.eee.hku.hk/
