HKU Impact: Social Media Competition

The Knowledge Exchange Office (KEO) launches the “HKU Impact: Social Media Competition”, aimed at encouraging HKU research students to showcase the importance of their theses and research discoveries to a general audience. In line with the aim to reach a broader audience, we welcome participants to post their entries on different social media outlets (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Threads, WeChat, XHS, Douyin, etc.).

By joining this competition, students will have an excellent chance to enhance their skills in communicating research impact and promoting knowledge exchange to a wider community. Through this competition, students will not only understand the significance and challenges of explaining their research through social media, but also find the process enjoyable, engaging, and impactful.
 


Eligibility 

  • Open to all HKU PG students whose are in their penultimate year or final year of study.
  • Students who are ineligible to participate will be disqualified from the competition.


How to join

  • State the social media platform (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Threads, WeChat, XHS, Douyin, etc.), the URL link of the post; and submit the completed application form by 26 April 2024
  • Submit the primary supervisor’s endorsement form

Guidelines 

  • Students are required to fill in the online application form and graphic designs &/or video to illustrate their research discoveries and/or thesis aimed at general audiences.
  • Each applicant must also upload his/her primary supervisor’s completed endorsement form to complete the application.
  • Students are required to upload the graphic designs &/or video to his/her personal social media platform. Participants are required to put a sentence “Making impact, inspired by HKU Knowledge Exchange Office” at the end of their post. Participants are required to set their competition enrollment post as public.
  • For video format, the maximum length of the social media post be 3 minutes. For graphic format, up to five graphics in the post is allowed. The script and content should be in English.
  • By entering the competition, students agree to provide the original files of their entries with Knowledge Exchange Office, HKU to be shared onto KEO social media and publicity.
  • The selected posts will be re-posted, promoted and published in the KEO social media platforms.
  • Each student can only submit ONE application. 
  • Late submission will not be considered.
  • The Knowledge Exchange Office, HKU reserves the right to amend the rules of the competition without prior notice.
  • The application shall be completed and submitted by 26 April 2024.  Applicants should read and fully understand the Terms & Conditions before entering the competition. 

Judging Criteria

Comprehension & content:

  • The social media post provided clear background and significance to the research question;
  • The social media post described the research strategy/design and the results/findings of the research; and
  • The social media post clearly described the conclusions, outcomes and impact of the research.

Visual communication:

  • The visual design and language used in the social media post were comprehensive for a non-specialist audience.
  • The social media post effectively raised awareness about their research and successfully engaged followers.

Award 

A range of cash prizes, varying from HK$3,500 to HK$10,000, will be presented to the winners. The selection committee will assess and rank the entires, awarding three prizes: Gold (1 award), Silver (1 award), and Bronze (1 award).

Timeline

  • The application deadline will be 26 April 2024
  • The final competition result will be announced in Spring 2024.
