Wisdom in Pearls: A Cross-Disciplinary Knowledge Exchange
The inaugural batch of Knowledge Exchange (KE) Student Ambassadors embarked on an enlightening journey to a pearl farm in Sai Kung in early March 2025. This immersive experience aimed to bridge the gap between academic research and societal impact, underlining the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration.
The pearl farm setting provided a picturesque backdrop for students to engage with impactful research initiatives. As they showcased innovative proposals to the research team, the KE Student Ambassadors demonstrated a deep understanding of how environmental, social, and economic factors intertwine within the realm of marine biology and sustainable practices.
Engaging with Marine Research
Preparation for this field trip involved KEO colleagues connecting different stakeholders for this meaningful collaboration. Extensive research was conducted, including multiple face-to-face discussions and examining scholarly papers for the Student Ambassadors and the research team from the School of Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Science at HKU. By immersing themselves in the complexities of marine ecosystems, the KEO colleagues were able to facilitate the Student Ambassadors with valuable insights into the ongoing work of the HKU researchers. This engagement enhanced their academic knowledge and fostered a sense of responsibility for the environment and local communities.
The hands-on experiences offered at the pearl farm were particularly impactful. The Student Ambassadors participated in pearl harvesting, witnessing firsthand the delicate processes that yield these natural treasures. They explored the production of pearl powder, understanding its antioxidant properties and market value. Such interactions highlighted the significance of sustainable seafood practices, reinforcing the connection between academic research and real-world applications.
Networking Opportunities
The field trip also facilitated essential networking opportunities, allowing the Student Ambassadors to connect with faculty, industry stakeholders, and local fishermen. Engaging in discussions about sustainable fishing practices, the ambassadors learned about the livelihoods of marine industry workers. This interaction enriched their understanding of the broader social implications of research efforts, emphasising the importance of community engagement in sustainable practices.
Proposal Development and Presentation
A key component of the day involved developing proposals to amplify research impacts. Working in smaller teams, the Student Ambassadors combined their diverse knowledge and perspectives to craft innovative strategies. This collaborative approach fostered creativity and critical thinking, essential for addressing complex societal challenges.
During the proposal presentation session, each group shared their ideas with the research team and their peers, sparking discussions about feasibility and potential impacts. The opportunity to receive feedback and engage in constructive dialogue further cemented the importance of cross-disciplinary knowledge exchange.

Highlights from the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund Jumpstarter 2025
The first day of the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund Jumpstarter 2025 at the HKU Pavilion began with great enthusiasm, showcasing promising startups and projects led by professors while fostering connections with partners, friends, and innovators. Eight startups presented their ambitious visions, impressive advancements, and unexploited potential. On the second day, approximately 60 attendees from the venture capital and industry sectors gathered, marking the event as a significant success. Congratulations to the winners: Dynano Semiconductor for Outstanding Presenter Champion and OncoVax Bioinnovation for 1st Runner-Up. Their innovative ideas and exceptional pitches truly stood out. Special thanks to the esteemed judges and award presenters for their invaluable insights, and a heartfelt thank you to all project teams for their dedication and creativity!
Highlights from HKU Startup Legal Day x Deacons
HKU Startup Legal Day in collaboration with Deacons gathered over 20 innovative startups and entrepreneurial teams to gain vital legal insights. Legal experts Mark Stevens, Jocelyn Chan, and Vera Chung shared valuable advice on avoiding pitfalls in joint ventures and drafting preliminary transaction documents. The event also offered personalised consulting sessions that helped startups navigate practical challenges.
HKU MedTech Co-innovation Conference: Visit to HKU-Shenzhen Hospital
The HKU Techno-Entrepreneurship Core and HKUMed recently organised a visit to The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital (HKU-SZH) with a team of innovative medical professionals and professors to foster knowledge sharing and exchange. Welcomed by Professor Kenneth M.C. Cheung, Hospital Chief Executive, the visit included showcases of projects such as AILSI, Estelle Biovita, AGI for smart dental manufacturing, and Peptide for Bone Regeneration.
