The Archivist and Access: Custodian and Guide, not Gatekeeper

Abstract

In the context of the Law Reform Commission’s current consultation on archives law, learn about the role of professional archivists in appraising electronic records, preserving them and making them available to researchers. Understanding their role and their mission will help you to make the best possible use of archival resources and to understand why some records are available sooner while others are not and how archivists can improve your research experience.

Biography

Stacy has had 20 years of experience in archives and museum administration, including research, records management, exhibition design and installation, preservation and conservation work, outreach and education, donor relations, legal issues, major archives building projects and all of the functions that are involved in building an archival repository and research center.

She came to Hong Kong in 2006 to start the first University Archives at The University of Hong Kong. The 100th anniversary of HKU, prompted interest in gathering together and preserving the documentation of the University’s past so that future scholars might benefit. The Archives has now expanded their holdings to include off campus facilities and will eventually be moving their offices, research, and exhibit facilities to a new home in one of the historic buildings on the Main Campus.

She is a Certified Digital Archives Specialist (DAS), Member of the Archives Law Subcommittee of the Law Reform Commission, HKSAR, Member of the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA), Member of the International Council on Archives (ICA), Member of the governing Board of the ICA Section on University and Research Facility Archives, Member of the Society of American Archivists, Member of the Hong Kong Archives Society, and Founding Member of the Archives Action Group (now ex officio).
