Highlighting Project Mingde: Recognising Innovation at HKU Engineering

Project Mingde, founded in 2003 by HKU’s Fellow Professor Nicolas S.Y. Yeung and his late wife Lorene, stands as a symbol of innovation at HKU. It exemplifies a collaborative effort involving the Department of Civil Engineering and the wider Faculty of Engineering, dedicated to fostering technologies that benefit society and stimulate economic growth. Through hands-on experiential learning opportunities, students are empowered to apply their skills in meaningful ways, embodying the initiative’s commitment to societal impact and innovation.

Recently, HKU’s Faculty of Engineering celebrated the inaugural HKCA Lo Pan Award, established with generous support from the Hong Kong Construction Association (HKCA). Launched in the 2023-2024 academic year, this prestigious award recognises outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students for their exceptional contributions to Project Mingde’s initiatives.

The award ceremony not only celebrated academic excellence but also featured the presentation of the Architizer A+ Award, an international accolade recently received by the Duling Educational and Cultural Centre. The event brought together students, faculty, and industry professionals, serving as an inspiring reminder of the shared vision of innovation and community service.

The HKCA Lo Pan Award underscores the importance of nurturing the next generation of engineers, encouraging boundary-pushing and active engagement with the world. As HKU honours these remarkable students, it reaffirms its commitment to the enduring spirit of collaboration and excellence that defines HKU Engineering and Project Mingde.
