Transforming Water Conservation with Smart Technology!

HKU's Centre for Water Technology and Policy's (HKU Water Centre) Water-smart Taskforce Programme exemplifies how cutting-edge technology can revolutionise water conservation.

Initiated by the Water Supplies Department (WSD) and led by HKU Water Centre, this programme highlighted on the Hong Kong Government News Network (政府新聞網) leverages AI-enabled smart water meter readers to provide precise, real-time data on water usage over an eight-week period. This innovative use of technology enables participants to monitor their consumption closely, resulting in over 80% of them successfully reducing water use and making a tangible impact.

Prof. Frederick Lee, Executive Director of the Centre, underscores the significance of this technological approach in promoting sustainable water practices throughout the community. The Centre’s interdisciplinary expertise merges engineering, data analytics, and social sciences to develop practical solutions for managing Hong Kong’s water resources.

During the campaign's third week, advanced AI algorithms analyse data collected from the smart meters to identify anomalies in water usage patterns. When irregularities are detected, a proprietary algorithm investigates the causes, allowing for targeted and effective water-saving advice. Participants receive midterm reports with personalised recommendations, empowering them to adjust their habits and optimise water conservation.

Moreover, corporate partners, including local hotels, benefit from the technology by gaining detailed insights into their water consumption, which helps them implement more effective conservation measures.
