In human society, reward and punishment are introduced as an incentive to induce cooperation. However, some people still try to cheat to win. So, is there a system with clear rewards and punishments in the world of other organisms? The answer is ‘yes’.
Researchers from Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), has identified novel host protease determinants, that facilitate the infection of SARS-CoV-2, including the Omicron variant, which provided new targets for combating the pandemic. In addition to the host protease determinants, members from the membrane-type matrix metalloproteinase (MT-MMP) and a disintegrin and metalloproteinase (ADAM) families were found to be able to mediate SARS-CoV-2 entry, with an increase efficiency against Omicron BA.1. This finding suggests that a new treatment strategy at MMP inhibition should be explored to effectively combat Omicron BA.1 and other Omicron sublineages. The research has now been published in the international scientific journal Science Advances
The Jockey Club “Peace and Awareness” Mindfulness Culture in Schools Initiative (JC PandA), organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences of The University of Hong Kong and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, has published a guidebook entitled “Mindfulness Culture in Schools” to share the practical experience and research findings gained over the project’s first three years.
The Remote e-Inspection System for Cross Border MiC Logistics system developed by Prof. Wilson Lu, Director of the iLab of the Faculty of Architecture together with Prof. Anthony Yeh, Chair Professor of the Department of Urban Planning and Design, and Mr. K.L. Tam, Director of the Estates Office of the University won the 2022 Hong Kong ICT Smart Logistics Gold Award.

The physical characteristics of a cell’s environment in turn impact cell functions. Therefore, understanding how cells interact with their environment provides crucial insights into cell biology and has wider implications in medicine, including disease diagnosis and cancer therapy. Researchers have developed numerous tools to study the interplay between cells and their 3D microenvironment.
