    HKU teams win top prizes at the 18th APICTA Awards

    HKU teams won two top prizes at the 18th Asia Pacific Information and Communication Technology Alliance (APICTA) Awards held in Guangzhou from October 10-13. Fano Labs, an HKU A.I. spin-off company specialising in speech and natural language processing (NLP) technologies won the top award in the “Business Services - ICT Solutions” category. Tale, a three-student team project on an AI-enabled solution for the coaching of presentation skills won the top award in the “Student - Tertiary Students Project” category respectively. The Awards are dubbed as the Oscars of the ICT arena in the Asia Pacific region. HKU Pro-Vice Chancellor and Vice President (Research) Professor Andy Hor said the awards strengthened the University’s confidence in its drive towards innovation and start-ups, which are also aligned with the current focus of Hong Kong, as mentioned by the Chief Executive in her latest Policy Address.

    HKU collaborates with National Academy of Medicine to nurture future talents and tackle global health issues

    HKU entered into a partnership agreement with the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in February 2017 to nurture future talents and to jointly tackle global challenges. Working with the NAM President Dr. Victor Dzau, HKU Vice President (Global) Professor John Kao helped establish several collaboration projects between HKU and NAM including an HKU-NAM International Fellowship Program for mid-career HKU faculty staff to work in Washington DC; organisation of international roundtables and summits to tackle global health-related issues such as regenerative medicine, mental health, ageing, and gender equity; and contextualisation of NAM consensus studies that are of practical use for HK. NAM is a world premier nonprofit, non-governmental organisation that provides advice on issues relating to biomedical science and health to policy-makers, professionals, leaders, and the public in the US and around the world.

    Professor Raj Thampuran, Managing Director, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore, gave a public lecture entitled "Open Innovation and Public-Private Partnerships" at HKU on January 25, 2016. Professor Thampuran elaborates on the importance of R&D and innovation for Singapore's economic transformation and growth, and A*STAR's role in Singapore's innovation system, as the primary mission-oriented government agency tasked with advancing innovation-based growth.
