HKU develops environmentally friendly ballast

HKU Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering Chair Professor Ron Hui Shu-yuen and his research team have invented the environmentally friendly "Ultra-low-loss magnetic ballast" to be used in fluorescent lamps. Professor Hui said the newly developed ballasts had longer lifespan and were recyclable. The ballast is also energy efficient, and can reduce expenses on repairs as well as electronic waste management.

Faculty Knowledge Exchange Awards 2011

Most faculties have introduced Faculty Knowledge Exchange (KE) Award this year in order to recognize the faculty's outstanding KE accomplishment that has made demonstrable economic, social or cultural impacts to benefit the community, business/industry, or partner organizations.

New Weapon to Crack Down Auctioned Fakes

The popular trend of online shopping nowadays is followed by a series of intellectual property infringement and auction of fake goods. In order to prevent this, a new system called Lineament Monitoring System II was jointly developed by the HKU Center for Information Security and Cryptography and the Customs and Excise Department of the HKSAR Government, making 24-hour monitoring possible.

Helping Sichuan Rebuild

Our faculty members in Engineering and a group of students across different disciplines brought their knowledge and expertise to Sichuan to build a solar-powered multimedia satellite e-learning system for the Yuanjia Primary School which was reconstructed after the 5.12 Sichuan Earthquake.

Hermes

Hermes is the first open-source solution in message exchange using the ebXML standard, developed by the Centre for E-Commerce Infrastructure Development (CECID) of the Faculty of Engineering. It is used in more than 80 countries, received many awards, and currently deployed by a number of HKSAR Government departments and companies in Hong Kong.
